OK time to get with it

Ok my friend, I'm taking the plunge into CSS.

Please please please can you create a basic tutorial?

Thanks in advance.

Work in progress, at last

It's amazing how one simple thing can stall everything. This site is a great case in point.

A minor upgade of PHP on the sever which hosts Greywulf::Net rendered the site unusable. Put simply the session handling stopped working, so it became impossible to make any posts; as soon as I hit Save, the site reported back that I didn't have permission to do that, Dave. This despite the fact that I was logged in, and my name's not Dave.

Now, I knew that an upgrade to the latest version of Drupal (the excellent Content Management System we use) would fix this particular bogey, but the problem was that the theme we use was designed for just one version of Drupal; this, the broken one.

What was I to do?

For a long, long time, I did nothing. I didn't want to lose the theme, but knew I had no choice but to upgrade. Of course, I could have fixed the theme, but that involved more diving into the depths of the Drupal theme engine than I was prepared to endure.

Anyhow. Today, I bit the bullet. The glorious theme is gone, Drupal is upgraded, and there's a whole load of elements to fix. Oh-so-important modules are missing, and lots of behind the scenes tweakery to be done.

So I'm going to turn this problem to an advantage and take you along with me, detailing all the design and code choices I make along the way. We're going to look into the hows and whys of site construction, and make this fresh start a chance to look again at what can be done to make a good site, great. That's the plan, anyhow. Wish me luck.

Till next time!

UPDATE Somewhat amazingly, the old theme works still. Primary links are down, so in the interests of speed and simplicity, they've been removed for now. I'm sure something else will come up, but in the meantime, THE THEME IS BACK! Yay!

Silly Queston...But

Is there anyway to create a "layer" effect justing using 'div' tags?

So you can display one image "on top" of another.

Cheers

More on the upgrade

This is Drupal 4.7.4, which is quite a jump up from the version we had been running. Drupal-5 is just around the corner with the release candidate out now. We're not going to move over to that though until it's officially stable. I've got it up and running locally, and it looks downright gorgeous; unfortunately some of the Modules and themes we use aren't available for this version yet, so we're holding back for now.

What we're going to do though is add in a little more openness to the site. I'm implementing captcha as we speak, so anonymous readers can comment in a spam-free environment without needing to register. Then we've going to bring a wiki on board, pull ::Dev into the mix and maybe bring in forums.

System Refresh?

Hi guys,
Kinda urgent, but I have developed a mini tweak system in XPRunner, but...
When you go into the Folder properties of any folder, and go into the "View" tab, there is a setting that say "Do not show hidden or system files", when you enabled that, any files/folders that are set to hidden get hidden, and the display refreshes and hides them.

The thing is, I can set the system properties to "Hide" or "show" files/folders with hidden properties, but it doesn't refresh the display.

Sorry if thats garbled, but can anyone make since of that and come up with a reason/solution?
I've tried everything.

Daft Question, but...

Hi all, just a quickie...
Currently, my system has been degraded in the respect it uses Windows, the thing is, it uses FAT32 and I'm wanting to convert to NTFS, I know how to do it, but the thing that worries me is, would I lose any data???

I don't want to lose all my work just for the sake of it, and I aint got enough disks to back it all up, even with compression.

What's this?

Greywulf:Net is all about bringing the twin skills of coding and design together. It's about bring up issues that matter to the programming and web developer community and providing a soundboard for new ideas. It doesn't matter whether it's technical, industry opinion or about self-employment. It's covered here.

If you're starting out on the road of web design, Greywulf::net is also a great place to find information, tutorials and help from people who've been in the industry for over ten years. If you've got the experience to give, please feel free to contribute!
